WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Katkauli Ka Maidan
This is where the historic Battle of Buxar was fought in 1764, a signpost in the history of
British colonial rule in India. It is situated on the outskirts of the Buxar town on the main road to Patna.
Buxar Fort
Situated on the bank of river Ganga, this fort was built by King Rudra Deo in 1054 AD. Also worth seeing are Rameshwar nath Temple, Nath Baba Temple, Gauri Shankar Temple, Waman Ashram, Ramrekha Ghat and Navlakha Temple.
Chausa
10 km west of Buxar town, Chausa is famous for its association with Chyavan Rishi. Also, a
historic war was fought here in which Sher Shah defeated Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1539 AD
Bihariji Temple
Some 15 km from Buxar town at Dumraon is situated the Bihariji Temple, which was constructed in 1825 on the orders of the then Maharaja of the erstwhile Dumraon estate,
Jaiprakash Singh. This is the temple where Shehnai maestro Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah
Khan, a native of Dumraon town, used to play Shehnai along with his father Bachai Miyan,who
was the official Shehnai player of the erstwhile Dumraon Raj, during his childhood.
Brahmeshwar nath Temple
Some 30 km from Buxar on the Buxar-Patna main road is situated the temple of Lord Shiva
which is famous as Baba Brahmeshwar nath Dham. Devotees in large numbers throng this temple in the month of Shrawan. The nearest railway station, Raghunathpur, is two km away from
the temple.
LOCAL FAIRS
There's an Ashram in Naya Bazar locality of Buxar town where a Sita Ram Vivah Mahotsava
(marriage function) is held every year in the month of November. Famous as 'Siya Piya Milan',
the event is attended by a large number of saints and devotees from across the country. A
'Panch Koshi Mela', also known as 'Litti-Chokha Mela', is also organised at Buxar this month
every year.
MUSEUM
Sita Ram Upadhyaya Museum
It was in the year 1979 that a museum was opened at Buxar, and some rare stone sculptures and coins adorn its shelves. Hundreds of very impressive terracottas, collected by a local
resident Late Sita Ram Upadhyaya, were later donated to the museum. In 1993, the Government of Bihar renamed it as the Sita Ram Upadhyaya Museum after the name of the donor.
